Aspinall signs to Matchroom’s Talent Agency

Aspinall inks terms with manager Eddie Hearn
I write this week’s newsletter from the comforts of a train bound to London for the unveiling of Matchroom’s newest venture: A Talent agency which aims to nurture athletes by managing their brands. The agency exists alongside the company’s existing operations in Boxing, Darts, Snooker and Multisport. UFC heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall is its inaugural member, with more signings imminent as the company declares “it is officially open for business”.
This move comes in the midst of an ongoing feud between Dana White and Eddie Hearn. Tensions appeared to reach new heights when Zuffa dislodged Conor Benn, one of Matchroom’s biggest commercial stars and sign him to a one-fight deal While Benn has called for Matchroom to remain in his corner, for his next fight with Regis Prograis at least, this is unlikely to be the case.
Shortly after this news, Hearn announced the signing of Tom Aspinall, the reigning UFC heavyweight champion of the world. This is a feat in itself considering every manager under the sun has tried and failed to sign the MMA star. Until recently Aspinall’s father has looked after his business dealings, with the help of a close knit team. It is worth reiterating that the Brit remains signed to the UFC, with Matchroom acting in a commercial/advisory capacity.
Managers typically deal with Hunter Campbell (UFC’s Chief Business Officer) for issues ranging from matchmaking to contract negotiations and managing fighter relationships. Given this is an advisory relationship time will tell how much Matchroom will deal with The UFC directly. A slight concern is that the feud between Hearn and White could indirectly affect the opportunities that Aspinall receives. However, this is unlikely considering Aspinall’s position as the current UFC heavyweight champion, meaning White needs to have him onside.
Aspinall’s current standing with the UFC is frosty given the aftermath of his fight with Ciryil Gane. The bout ended as a no-contest after Aspinall suffered a nasty eye poke, which left him needing medical treatment. there is no news currently regarding his return to the octagon.
A designated talent agency has been on the Matchroom agenda for some time. Anthony Joshua signed a career-long promotional deal with Matchroom and runs his own sports management Agency 258. He has actively called for Hearn to support him in advising athletes in other sporting disciplines. This appears to be a full circle moment forHearn given he started his career in athlete management, before joining the family business.
It will be interesting to see Matchroom’s longer-term vision for their newest agency. Is the signing of Tom Aspinall a reaction to Connor Benn moving to Zuffa or is there a long-term strategy. Only time will tell.
